1976 Allied Seawind Mark II Cutter "Petrel"
January 2016 update from Brian and Judy Manley: We live in Anchorage ,Alaska and have a Seawind II 0n lake Ontario that we get to sail summers when we return to Upstate NY to see family .The Westerbeke has fired up each summer even after setting for 11 months .We normally do not even have a dock in marina, I just get all system running still on stands .He sets us in the water and we leave right away, try to be out for 10 days or so. Always some of best time of summer. This boat was a salvage from Katina, never sank just pushed ashore. someone else brought it to Rome NY. It was under a great cover so was able to work on it all weather great fun. Stopped almost every night on way home just to do something. Maybe just follow a wire that was not labeled ,lots of those on old boats. At the time we were racing and cruising a 1969 Morgan 30. In Alaska we are partners in a 30ft Sundowner tug on Prince William Sound, little warmer inside then being on sailboat .
Brian sent some before and after pictures:
The following info comes from an email received in 2006. I don't know who sent it.
I am the new owner of Petrel (1976 cutter, #36).
The good news is that Petrel is restorable. She is afloat right now and will soon be shipped up to Rome, NY to a marina on the Erie Canal, where restoration will begin.
The deck is largely undamaged except for stanchions, some rigging, the
aluminum toe rail broken loose (not serious), and the pushpit. The worst
damage is the rudder, the mainsail, and amidships: one crack above the
water line, lots of scratches, furniture tabbing and several small details. Considering the pounding she took, I think it's a testament to the strength
of the boat. She will take some work to restore but is certainly worth it. I have included a few photos taken in early June, 2006 to add to the site.
You can see that things are not so dire.
